Family Day

Saturday is our family day around here. For the last two years, it’s been this way.

Four generations get together at one location and just spend time watching a movie or fighting over the remote. We have food, of course, but I’m not making anything. Nothing hot that is, with seasoning, herbs, and spices- wait, are those all the same?

Whatever, I’m not a food scientist, so my ability to concoct something remotely savory is pretty much fifty-fifty maybe 35-65 even. I’m not sure cause it depends on what I would be cooking. Most of what I cook is palatable, I think, but I do know that I clean up real good.

In the kitchen there are three main duties when it comes to the food; you’re either cooking, serving, or cleaning up. As I said, I clean up quite well.

I really want to learn how to curl carrots into cute little blooming flowers, but I guess I just haven’t taken the time to look up the right YouTube video. One of the prestigious positions in the kitchen for the non-cook is the Prep to make everything appear pretty and orderly, so I get it. The real star loves what I do as well, it’s like rolling out the red carpet for the one with the real skills.

I used to be so good at making the potato salad, well an heirloom, secret family recipe potato salad. My mother and Auntie G taught me how to show I meant business with my potato salad. I was quite proud if I say so myself to bring my special dish to any family function we had back then. I would top it off with my finely sliced tomatoes and finish off with a dash of paprika, salt, and pepper.

I haven’t made other blue-ribbon recipes since then, just proves every kid deserves an award in the kitchen, at some point. Might just be for cooking the best dish, or serving?…hmmm but ok, and of course. Drum Roll, cleaning it.

Every part of it is important, every role is significant and yes, it helps the food taste delicious if you specialize in it or show signs of real potential. Either way, we gotta eat and the kitchen has to be cleaned just so we can do this all over again.

So it’s a big bird on the menu today, mother has roasted a turkey hours ago, and she’s waiting on my sister to bring her here. I’m heading down to the kitchen now to cut up some onions and cucumbers cause I can make a mean relish plate.

That’s even without the carrots being cut into adorably cute florets.
